The tradition of Jack-O’-Lanterns dates back hundreds of years and originally did not involve the pumpkins we know today. The Irish were the pioneers of this Halloween symbol, using Jack-O’-Lanterns to ward off evil spirits, particularly one known as Stingy Jack. Instead of pumpkins, they carved out turnips, potatoes, or beets.

The Legend of Stingy Jack

Stingy Jack is a mythical Irish figure who famously tricked the devil. One day, Jack invited the devil for a drink, but when the bill arrived, he didn’t want to pay. He cleverly persuaded the devil to transform into a coin so he could settle the tab. However, Jack kept the “devil coin” in his pocket next to a cross, preventing the devil from returning to his original form. Eventually, Jack released the devil on the condition that he would never claim Jack’s soul.

When Jack passed away, God rejected him for his dealings with the devil, and the devil couldn’t take him to hell due to their agreement. Consequently, Stingy Jack was condemned to wander the earth for eternity, carrying a carved-out turnip with a burning coal inside to light his way. Irish immigrants brought this Jack-O’-Lantern tradition to the New World, where we now celebrate it with vibrant orange pumpkins.

1. Cut a Hole: Using a pumpkin carving knife, cut a circle in the top or bottom of the pumpkin to create an opening.
2. Scoop Out the Flesh: Use a spoon or scraper to remove the seeds and pulp from inside the pumpkin.
3. Create Your Design: Sketch your pumpkin face on paper and trace it with a black marker. Tape your design to the pumpkin and poke holes along the outline using a needle tool.
4. Carve the Pumpkin: Carefully cut along the design with a carving knife. You may need to repeat this step for clean edges. Push out the carved sections.
5. Illuminate Your Pumpkin: Light your pumpkin using a battery-powered pumpkin light or a string of LED lights.

Tips for Easy Cleanup

Carving pumpkins can get messy, so it’s best to do it outside if possible. If you’re indoors, use a garbage bag to catch the scraps and make cleanup easier.
